Looking Back to My Past

It's almost three years since I decided to live here in the United States. It was a tough decision for me when I left my family back home, just to follow my heart's beat. I had to quit my job and leave my family and friends. I used to work at Cebu Toyo Corporation, under the Japanese management. I admit that I got tired sometimes in my job as a production worker. Maybe because I was assigned to a very difficult section which wasn't for women -- just men. There were only a few other women there, and they were all musclebound and Amazonian. We operated the machines and fixed them if there were mechanical problems. We learned to use different tools, like Allen wrenches, mechanical fliers, adjustable wrenches, microscopes, interferometers, and some more gadgets. We produced high precision lenses. Sounds like fun, doesn't it? Not. And plus, we were standing for the entire 8-12 hours if there was overtime. My legs were killing me and also my back. We didn't have time to rest or even any break time because we tried to reach the daily quota or else we had to write an explanation letter, why we didn't reach the quota. Marx would have had a field day analyzing the setup. It was always a miracle if the machine didn't have trouble for the entire shift. Anyway, the only thing that I miss about being there is the people surrounding me, my co-workers. Despite difficulties, we had time to joke and smile while working and that makes any job easier, even slave labor.

I received a book through the mail this afternoon; and it was from my father-in-law. The book is all about the rules of playing baseball. He knows that I am a big fan of the Yankees. The season will start very soon. I think it will start next week. Last year, I spent a lot of time watching baseball. Like, my day is not complete if they don't have a game. But, if they lose I feel very sad too. It is funny how I get obsessed with it. First, I didn't know the rules; it was confusing to me how they score. But little by little I learned it, by watching them.

My daughter Kate is now teething. I noticed this morning that there is a tooth coming through the bottom gum in the front. It is very sharp and she bit her own finger! She is cranky; she wants me to hold her all the time. It hurts my back and I can't do my housework. I understand her but sometimes it's annoying too. Now I realize how tough it is to be a mother. You have to have more patience and deal with everything in a reasonable manner.

Winter Snow Storm

It was beautiful outside today. The ground was fully covered by snow. No wonder that it was freezing last night. I know that there is a storm coming. But I didn't expect that it would last long. All flights had been delayed for almost nine hours this morning. Hubby got lucky because he wasn't traveling on the plane at this time. He left this morning by train going to Pennsylvania to do his show. I couldn't imagine the road how tough it is for drivers. It is icy though and slippery. Hopefully, drivers will be double careful to prevent any accidents from happening.

High Sugar Level

I called my mom last night through long distance. We talked about our family health; she said that my brother Silvio has a high sugar level. He failed the physical examination to renew his license. I'm so worried though because he's the breadwinner of the family. He has three kids to educate and a wife. Unfortunately, they don't have savings in the bank. He said to my mom that if his symptoms persist he will be forced to come back home where my mom lives. And this is giving me a headache; I know that they're going to ask help from me very soon and I don't have a job yet here. How could I help them? I'm still babysitting my child. This is a big challenge for me now; I have to figure out how to earn from home. Then one of my friend told me that I can make money through blogging. So I ask right away the name of the web site that she used;

Anyway, as far as my brother goes, the solution for him is to stop drinking soda and eating white rice. Easier said than done for a guy in the Philippines, I know. But if he wants to have good health, he has to make that change. Everyone should hear this message. If you keep eating a high carb diet you're going to get diabetes. It's a given fact, well recognized in cutting edge medicine. You can read more about how it works in Ray Kurzweil and Terry Grossman, M.D.'s book Fantastic Voyage.

I put the bowl in the microwave full of spaghetti, then I covered it with a plastic plate in order to avoid my spaghetti popping. I set the timer to 2 minutes to heat it up. And when it finished I took it out of the microwave. Ouch!!! it's so hot I couldn't remove the plastic cover on the top. It took me awhile to figure it out; I used a butter knife to release it. I know it's not a good idea to put plastic in a microwave, but I never thought anything like this would happen. I'm just being bovine... Hubby kept teasing me; but I don't care, as long I'm happy it doesn't bother me... He says microwaving plastic releases cancer-causing agents, such as Dioxin. Yuck!

He was so amused he took this photo of me trying to pry the stuck plastic plate off the bowl. The plate actually melted a little, like hot cheese. If you click the photo it should enlarge and then you can see where he sits (to my right) at the table, and against the wall on the bookshelf some of his favorite books, including The Antioxidant Miracle by Lester Packer (red spine) and Shyness and Dignity, a "fantastic" novel by Norwegian Dag Solstad. On the left is a paperback copy of 1984, his favorite book. If you look carefully you can see that I have a butter knife in my right hand. I finally used that to pry the melted plate off the bowl.

Chocolate Cake

One of my favorite dessert is chocolate cake. Every time hubby goes to New York, he always brings me this dessert. He knows that I'm crazy about it and he also found an organic store that sells this delicious cake, which is made with non-refined cane sugar. And it is very convenient for him to go this store because it's right near the bus stop where he gets off from his job. The store is LifeThyme Natural Market They sell a wide variety of foods, such as fruits, vegetables, meat, cooked food, and most of all a whole aisle of vitamins. Michael is so impressed with this store; in fact he is almost there every day.

Nasty Weather

Since Sunday morning we had this crazy weather. The temperature was below to zero and the wind gusts were over 55 mph with snow showers. But it suddenly changed to 40 degrees Fahrenheit this afternoon with heavy rain. The snow melted right away. I didn't see the sunshine; it is hazy day. Hubby's flight was 30 minutes delayed this morning going to Tennessee. And I haven't had any contact with him until this time. I hope and pray that he is safe and away from any danger.

Later he called from Tennessee where he said a tornado flattened an entire college. He is a terrific traveler, going from school to school to do shows on his book The Art of Kissing.

Today is so hectic I have no time to write. Oh, boy, would J.D. Salinger love to hear about this! My parents in-law would like to see us this afternoon. And I'm still doing my laundry and also I have to feed Kate too. Hubby is so busy; he has to drop three boxes of DVDs about The Art of Kissing in the UPS store because his DVD agent is asking for more copies of it. Oh, what a day...

Henny Penny

Every time I feed Kate I tell her this nursery rhyme about Henny Penny. It seems that she likes it. I learned it in the first grade in the Philippines and I didn't forget it even though many years passed by. And now I'm trying to share it with my child. Hopefully she'll remember these words in the future, and I hope that she'll pass it on to her own kids. In fact, hubby loves this story too; he tape recorded it and plays it sometimes to Kate.

Four Months Old

Kate is four months old now. She's up to 13 lbs already; she's growing faster than I ever expected. And she started flipping to the front and back. In other words if you leave her on her back she'll flip to her front, and vice versa. I noticed that she keeps choking now more than before; maybe because of her saliva that's started to work too. Her appetite is also bigger: she used to drink 3 ounces before but now she can finish 4 ounces. Maybe next week I'll try to give her solid food. Anyway, happy birthday!
