Carl Jung

The psychologist Carl Jung was known for his work with Freud in the early days of his career, but then he broke with Freud on certain issues related to the unconscious, and Jung began doing research into spiritual and mythological dimensions of the unconscious. One of his main contributions to our understanding of human psychology is his notion of the archetypes. These are quasi mythic structures supposedly inherent in the brains of all humans. The archetypes include mother, father, sun, moon, dog, death, towers, and other symbols. Many of the tarot cards are archetypes. The reason I mention Jung is that in this blog about families I'm sure there should be some discussion of dreams since many family members share their dreams. Well, archetypes can help you understand your dreams, and for that we can thank both Freud and Jung. In a future post I'll talk about Jung's decision to build a castle tower as an addition to his home on Lake Geneva in Switzerland.
